SQUAD ON PC
What does bringing Squad to console mean for PC players?
PC remains a fundamental part of Squad and of Offworld.
Expanding Squad to console gives us the opportunity to grow the Squad community and invest more into the game across all platforms, including PC.
We now have more developers working on Squad improvements than we have had for a long time, with teams focused on new content, gameplay improvements, optimization, technical development, and the long-term health of the game.
Our goal is to build one shared future for Squad across PC and console or what we are calling One Squad.
What does “One Squad” mean?
One Squad means developing Squad around a shared future across PC and console.
That means:
- Major content and game updates will be aligned across platforms following console launch.
- The core gameplay experience will remain consistent.
- New factions, maps, systems, and improvements will be developed with the whole Squad community in mind.
There will still be platform-specific differences where they make sense, including controls, interface, certification requirements, hardware optimization, and features that depend on each platform.
What does One Squad mean for Community Servers?
Community-run servers and the people who operate them have been central to Squad since the beginning, and they remain an important part of Squad's future.
PC will continue to utilize Community Hosted Servers
Console will have a combination of Official Console Platform Specific Servers, Official Console Crossplay Servers and Console Community Hosted Servers.
How will crossplay and Community Servers work?
PC players will be able to create community-hosted servers using the console ruleset. It will be completely opt-in for PC players to seek these out in a different section of the PC server browser. Console players who have crossplay enabled will be able to see eligible PC community console specific servers in their server browser and join them, allowing PC and console players to play together in those specific environments.
PlayStation and Xbox players will also be able to play together through opt-in crossplay on Official Console servers.
Will PC and console receive updates at the same time?
At console launch Squad updates will be delivered day and date across all platforms unless we need to address a specific platform only issue that does not impact other platforms.
How does console development benefit Squad on PC?
Bringing Squad to console has required us to invest heavily in engine optimization, tooling, and the underlying technology of the game.
Combined with our move to Unreal Engine 5, this gives the development team access to new technologies and improved tools that can help reduce memory usage, improve performance, and deliver a smoother experience across more hardware configurations.
Squad will continue to be optimized appropriately for the hardware platforms, while technical improvements that can benefit the game across platforms will be shared wherever possible.
What does console mean for modding on PC?
Modding remains an important part of Squad on PC.
This year we added a dedicated production role specifically to better support our modding community, and we will continue supporting PC modding as Squad moves into its next chapter.
Console platforms have different technical, legal, and platform requirements around user-generated content, so mods will not be available on console at launch.
We'll share more about the possibilities for console mod support if and when we have more to announce.
WHY CONSOLE?
Why are you bringing Squad to console now?
For years, one of the most common questions we've received has been whether Squad could come to console.
Until now, we weren't prepared to do that unless we believed we could preserve what makes Squad special.
Hardware has moved forward, Squad's technology has evolved, and our development capabilities have grown. We now believe there is an opportunity to introduce Squad to a much larger group of players without fundamentally changing what Squad is.
Growing the community also gives us a stronger foundation to continue investing in Squad across PC and console for years to come.
What does this mean for the future of Squad and Offworld?
Expanding Squad to new platforms gives us the opportunity to grow the community and focus on developing the game for that larger community. This is a big hurdle to overcome that will allow the whole team to double down on improving Squad, expanding it with new features, addressing old pain points, and bringing it up to par with the modern technologies and expectations of the gaming audience.
One Squad gives us one game, a larger community, and a shared content roadmap across PC and console.
PC remains a fundamental part of that future. Console expands it.

CONTROLS AND GAMEPLAY
How have you adapted Squad to work on a controller?
Squad has significantly more communication, interaction, and command functionality than a typical shooter, so simply mapping the existing PC controls directly onto a controller wasn't good enough.
We've designed a console-specific control scheme and interface that allows players to access Squad's depth while playing naturally on a controller.
We'll be showing much more of the controls and interface before launch.

Communication remains one of the things that makes Squad, Squad.
Local voice, squad communication, and command communication remain core parts of the experience.
A microphone isn't technically required to launch the game, but Squad is built around teamwork and players will have a significantly better experience when communicating with their squad.
Will proximity and local voice chat work on console?
Yes.
Will console have a server browser?
Yes.
Can console players host their own servers?
Yes.

Yes.

COMMUNITY
How will new console players become part of the Squad community?
Every veteran Squad player was new once.
One of the things that has always made Squad special is the role experienced players play in helping newcomers understand how the game works: communicating, working with their squad, learning the importance of objectives, and understanding that individual kills aren't the only thing that matters.
Console introduces a new group of players to that same style of game and to the broader Squad community.
How are you making Squad accessible to new players without simplifying the game?
The challenge isn't removing Squad's depth. It's making that depth easier to understand and interact with.
We've focused on controls, UI, and onboarding so new players can learn Squad more easily without sacrificing the communication, teamwork, coordination, and tactical decision-making that define the game.
The goal is to make Squad easier to learn, not simpler to master.
WHAT'S NEXT?
When will we see console gameplay?
Soon.
Between now and release, we'll be showing much more of Squad running on console, including controls, UI, gameplay, performance, and platform-specific features.
